ACCOMMODATION
General Information
METU aims to provide on- campus accommodation to all exchange students who wish to stay in the campus dormitories. There are 3 types of campus dormitories; State, Semi-Private and Private. Meals are not included in the dormitory fees but each facility has canteen or cafeteria where students can eat breakfast and other meals for a nominal cost.
Location of the Dormitories
Most of the dormitories at METU are located in the same general area near the campus shopping center with banks, post office, the medical center and several sports facilities. The shopping center has a variety of eateries open daily, including weekends and holidays. Municipality buses and private minibuses (dolmus) run regularly to and from main parts of the city daily including weekends and holidays from early morning until midnight. Transportation all over the campus is facilitated by regular bus shuttles which are free of charge for METU students. Public buses and private minibuses (dolmuş) run regularly to and from main parts of the city daily from early morning until midnight including weekends and holidays.
Application Procedures for Incoming Exchange Students
The applications for campus accommodation are collected by METU International Cooperations Office (ICO) each semester. The prospective incoming exchange students are informed by ICO in line with the calendar of the application period. The accommodation application process starts once the incoming students are selected by METU. The dormitories and the types of rooms offered to the prospective students may change each year depending on the availability of vacant rooms at the campus dormitories.
Costs and Fees
All fees are fixed in Turkish Liras and regardless of their nationality, all international students pay the same amount as Turkish students. Students are advised to bring enough cash which can be converted easily into Turkish Liras at one of the campus banks to cover deposits and the first month’s dormitory fee. Credit cards are not accepted. All fees will be indicated during the accommodation application process. Students are required to make payments as indicated above upon arrival. Therefore, we advise students to bring the necessary initial payment in cash. As METU offers a wide range of accommodation options for incoming exchange students, the fees vary. The monthly fees at campus dormitories are ranging from 250 TL to 1150 TL per month.
Rules and Regulations of Campus Dormitories
Students who wish to reside in METU campus dormitories have to agree to follow the rules of the dormitories. Each dormitory has a full-time director.
Off-Campus Accommodation
Students who wish to reside outside of the METU campus should take their own responsibility to arrange accommodation outside of the campus. It is very usual for students to rent a shared flat with one or two more people in the neighbourhoods called “100. Yıl Mahallesi” or “İşçi Blokları Mahallesi”. The monthly rent for the flats is ranging from 1300 TL to 2000 TL per month. We strongly advice you to join the Facebook groups called “100. Yıl Evleri” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/100yilevleri) and “100. Yıl Sakinleri” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/100yilsakinleri) , there you can search for a flat or you can find some people who are looking for flatmates.
